Hedda was born at Amberhall kennels outside Johannesburg in South Africa in a litter of 12 puppies (3+9). I’ve had my eye out for Heddas dam Ariella for a while and was daydreaming about a puppy from her. As I had done this trip once before (with Fuji) and always said “never again” because of both the difficulties and the expense of importing from a “third country” as it is called this was of course just wishful thinking. I also liked a male at Amberhall (Cintsa) and thought that maybe it is enough to just import frozen semen from him so I contacted Elisabeth at Amberhall and made my proposal for the semen. Unfortunately that too turned out to be really difficult (and expensive!) due to new EU-regulations so Elisabeth asked me if I was interested in a puppy from Ariella instead? Well, by asking me that she gave me ideas and those ideas just kept festering in my head until I couldn’t say no – cost and difficulty be damned. Fast forward to the summer of 2023 and Hedda was finally able to move to her new home in Sweden (after a spring with a whole arsenal of vaccinations, bloodtests etc.) at the tender age of 11 months. It was a very happy day in the end of august when we could go and pick her up at Arlanda airport (and after sweating for 3 hours in the Swedish customs, apparently they don’t really know what to do when a live animal arrives from Africa). When we came home Hedda said hi to our three other dogs and then she jumped on my home office couch and slept for almost 12 hours. Poor thing!
From the beginning Hedda has shown us what a remarkable girl she is. She loves attention, cuddling, people in general and other animals. She gets along very well with both our other dogs and our two cats. She is sweet and very brave – not afraid of anything. Very easy to bring along and handle in every environment. Like most young ridgebacks she is always hungry, still quite intensive and also very interested in game and hunting. Besides of showing, which she has proven to excel at, we have also introduced her to game tracking and agility. Both which she loves and is very good at. Healthwise Hedda has been completely sound her whole life. No problems with allergies and no sensitive stomach.
We are planning for Heddas first litter in the spring/summer of 2025. See our “planned litters” section.
